One of the 18 major rivers in the country priority areas needing interventions per resolution of the Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.

Creation of MBRBMC
    On December 08, 2014 the DENR-PENRO Sarangani in partnership with Provincial Government of Sarangani, Regional Line Agencies (RLAs), Concern Local Government Units and other stakeholders facilitated the Organization of Malungon-Buayan River Basin Management Council (MBRBMC) held at Green Leaf Hotel, General Santos City.
        
The Council shall functions to oversee the implementation of all development undertakings within 142,420 hectares river basin.

As suggested: Farmers Organization, PNP, AFP, Office of the Civil Defense, DOLE-stanfilco, Tribal Groups in Sarangani, South Cotabato and General Santos City will be added as members.
